With the amount of people in the state, the need for medical workers is skyrocketing. Here’s just a few of the metropolitan areas that can serve your needs:

Medical assisting is a great career choice if you want to work in a doctor’s office, dentist office, chiropractor’s, or even a hospital. The need for medical assistants and their flexibility make them highly sought after in the medical world. If you want to help people but have an office component in the mix, you will probably like medical assisting. Much of medicine is paperwork, and medical assistants are the experts at medical paperwork. When choosing your school, keep in mind your needs and time constraints in pursuing your career.
1. CUNY Queensborough Community College
Locations: Oakland Gardens, NY
CUNY Queensborough Community College offers both a certificate program in medical assisting and an associate’s degree. You can consider the pros and cons of each. A certificate program usually takes about 12 to 18 months, but some can be completed in nine, depending on your availability. You will have the opportunity to sit for certification with this degree, but some employers require the more advanced associate’s degree. If you opt for the two year associate’s degree, not only are you more attractive to employers, you can also take your credits and apply them toward further a different degree, such as nursing. The great thing about this college is that you have a choice that you can make depending on your needs and time constraints.
2. Niagara County Community College
Locations: Sanborn, NY
Niagara County Community College also offers an associate’s degree in medical assisting. Although it is across the state from the big city, it is still part of the New York state educational system. All of the colleges in this system are accredited by the national accrediting agencies for medical assisting schools. It is important to note if the school you are choosing has accreditation from either ABHES (the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools) or CAAHEP (the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs) if you want to pursue national certification. The certifying board for medical assistants will not accept a degree from a facility that does not have accreditation from one of these agencies, so choose carefully when considering colleges. Always ask if they have the appropriate certifications to protect your investment.
3. Monroe College
Locations: Bronx, NY
If you live in the city, the Bronx-based Monroe College might meet your needs for a medical assisting program. Unfortunately, it only offers an associate’s degree in medical assisting, but if this is the program for you, then you should certainly put this small college on your list of possibilities. The website states that the New York State Department of Labor is predicting a 31 percent increased need for medical assistants through the year 2020. This is due to the increased aging of the Baby Boomers and the large amount of them that live in New York State. Medical assistants will be needed at doctor’s offices and in hospitals to handle the influx of medical paperwork and to handle routine medical care.
